“Viking Ship”

Artist’s Statement:
A Viking Ship inspired quilt was just waiting to happen ever since I purchased a box of licorice a couple of years ago. The picture of the ship on the box just stuck in my head. Combine that idea with the Scandinavian designer fabrics that were part of the quilt challenge and it was a perfect match. But the real impetus for this piece comes from my Scandinavian heritage. I have fond memories of my Finnish grandfather who, with a sly twinkle in his eye on a cold winter day would say, "Minnesota weather is a tonic to my Vikin blood."
This quilt was created as part of Project Patchwork, a partnership between IKEA and Textile Center. Artists were challenged to make an art quilt using only IKEA fabrics.
