“Pinwheel Parade”

Artist’s Statement:
I am fascinated by the manifestation of the invisible on our material world. The wind is one force whose presence we only know when we feel it on our faces, or see it move blades of grass and tree branches or brilliantly colored petals of little party pinwheels. "Pinwheel Parade" represents a dream-like image that came to me when I saw the brilliant IKEA fabric colors in my challenge packet. I saw bright little pinwheels, dozens of them, clustered in a park-like setting beyond a brightly decorated party-room rim the parade of pinwheels. The shiny circular quilting reveals the invisible force that spins the pinwheels briskly, giving you a glimpse of the wind and its effect on everything it touches. The design is my own. I used a technique that I learned from Martha Thompson's book "Square Dance". This involves patching together a grid, cutting it apart, and re-arranging it into the pinwheels you see here. The heavy stiff IKEA fabric was not the easiest to use for this multi-seamed design, but I was pleased that it worked!
This quilt was created as part of Project Patchwork, a partnership between IKEA and Textile Center. Artists were challenged to make an art quilt using only IKEA fabrics.
