“Inner Circle”

Artist’s Statement:
I have a vivid memory from the 1970's of a piece of fiber art in which the artist used French knots to cover his canvas, zooming in on one part of a butterfly's wing. When I saw the fabric that I used, the white dots on the abstracted image made me think of the French knots used in that long-ago piece. Since I primarily have worked as a beader for the past 20 years, I also had to use beads for some of the graphics. I wanted to give some dimension to the piece; so I embroidered four pieces and cut them out. I then Appliqued them to the background, using felt behind the embroidered pieces to raise them off the surface. I realized as I added these pieces and embroidered the background that I had created a circle, which is repeated outward through the images on the background fabric, hence the name Inner Circle beause they seem to swirl around that inner circle. Peggy Wright, very much a beginning quilter.
This quilt was created as part of Project Patchwork, a partnership between IKEA and Textile Center. Artists were challenged to make an art quilt using only IKEA fabrics.
