Artist’s Statement:
When I first saw the four pieces of IKEA fabric I received for the patchwork challenge I was not quite sure what I could do with them . As I began my design process for my quilt I stated to reflect on the history of quilters and the traditional notion of quilting as a necessity, for warm. This opened up my thinking and I considered this idea and how many quilts, over time, were created over out of scraps or pieced together with what the maker had available. I also believe that by using the materials you have on hand that allowed the quilter to be more creativity because they are enhancing a fabrics beauty or allowing for a painterly arrangement of colors or pattern. By letting the my fabric be what it is - bold lines, deep colors, and interesting shapes or texture, I was able to let each element or block of my quilt stand out, yet at the smae time come together to form a cohesive piece. I see my IKEA challegne piece as part art quilt as well as part traditional quilting in concept. I was inspried by the fabrics and was able to use my creativity to produce a straight forward design that is both bold and rich in color.
This quilt was created as part of Project Patchwork, a partnership between IKEA and Textile Center. Artists were challenged to make an art quilt using only IKEA fabrics.
